Third Suspect Admits Role in 2002 Killing of Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay
At a Brooklyn federal court hearing, 52-year-old Jay Bryant confessed to helping gunmen enter a locked Queens studio where Run-DMC’s DJ Jason Mizell was fatally shot on October 30, 2002. He acknowledged knowing they intended to kill Mizell and said his actions were wrong. Prosecutors say Bryant originally teamed up with known drug dealers in a cocaine distribution plot and later guided the shooters into the recording studio. His DNA was matched to a hat left at the scene, leading to a murder charge added in 2023. Magistrate Judge Peggy Cross-Goldenberg recommended a 15–20 year prison sentence, with credit for time already served. This admission marks the first public acknowledgment of organizing the attack. In 2020, Mizell’s godson and a childhood friend were charged with shooting him in what prosecutors describe as a drug deal gone wrong. Bryant will be sentenced later by US District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall.
