Urgent Warning: Southern Nigeria Must Unite Against Rising Terror Threat
Nigeria faces a growing security challenge from armed groups pushing south. These forces now operate in Borno, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kwara before advancing into Nasarawa, Benue and Kogi. Historical records show that Uthman dan Fodio’s 19th-century jihad was halted by Tiv warriors. Their use of poisoned arrows and organized defense prevented the Sokoto Caliphate from overrunning the Benue Valley. Today’s bandits often link up with extremist networks. Recent attacks in border states and forest corridors—from Oyo and Ogun through Edo, Delta and Anambra—have stoked fears of encirclement in the South. The South must build a regional security framework free from political delays. Coordinated action and local defense strategies can avert a larger crisis and protect communities before it’s too late.
