Bola Ige’s 1981 Letter Celebrating Free Secondary Education in Oyo

Bola Ige’s 1981 Letter Celebrating Free Secondary Education in Oyo

In July 1981, then-Governor Bola Ige wrote to Oyo State students who had just completed their first year of free secondary education. He celebrated their achievement and highlighted his administration’s commitment to providing every child with schooling. Ige recalled overcoming doubts about admitting over 120,000 pupils in one year. He emphasised the belief that education is a right, praised the Unity Party of Nigeria’s support for the programme, and urged students to care for their books and help their families. He also reminded pupils of their role in the Young Pioneers Movement and encouraged them to set a good example for others before wishing them a restful holiday.

True. That call for universal free schooling still pushes us to fund teachers, facilities and access in Oyo today.

It's interesting that Ige highlighted commitment but the letter doesn't address funding or teacher shortages.

While celebrating free schooling is great, was every child truly reached, or did some communities still face barriers after 1981?

Modern policymakers can study Ige's emphasis on wide enrollment and community mobilization before launching new free education schemes.
