Why ‘Obidients’ May Be Undermining Peter Obi’s Campaign

Why ‘Obidients’ May Be Undermining Peter Obi’s Campaign

Three days ago, I met my brother Seyi Tinubu. He plans to vote for his father, while I intend to support Peter Obi. When I asked Seyi why, he was met with insults from all sides. I wonder if some Obi supporters—often called “Obidients”—have become too aggressive. Their harsh critiques even pushed Reno Omokri toward Tinubu. They also target the NDC chairman and pressure Atiku to step aside, which only alienates new supporters. It’s ironic that Obi and Tinubu will still greet one another at official events. Everyone has the right to meet or greet whoever they choose. Ultimately, Obi doesn’t owe his fan base or anyone else an explanation. Perhaps his greatest challenge is managing his own supporters’ behavior.

Focusing on clear policy comparisons instead of personal attacks might help Obidients communicate Peter Obi's vision more effectively to undecided voters.
