Wike: Fubara's Mistake Was Trying to Build His Own Political Structure

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara made a political mistake by trying to build an independent structure shortly after taking office. Speaking during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Wike said Fubara should have consolidated the political structure that supported his emergence as governor. He argued that the attempt to create a separate base became evident within Fubara's first 100 days in office. The disagreement between both men sparked a prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, including impeachment moves by lawmakers loyal to Wike. Wike said political leaders must distinguish genuine advice from counsel that could damage their administration.

Should a governor be expected to build an independent political structure after taking office, or preserve the existing one?

Wike's framing makes the dispute sound less about governance and more about who controls Rivers State's political machinery.

Calling it a mistake may be too convenient; trying to establish independence is not automatically wrong for a sitting governor.
