Soft Life in a Hard Economy: How I Keep My Guilty Pleasures Alive

Soft Life in a Hard Economy: How I Keep My Guilty Pleasures Alive — 1 of 6
1 / 6

Nigeria’s inflation has climbed past 15%, and I felt it in every part of my life. Over the past six months, my spontaneous “living in the moment” spending quietly shrank. I still buy clothes, but I pause before I tap “order”. I ask if I really have somewhere to wear it or if it can be styled multiple ways. Sometimes I close the app and come back later — that little extra time helps me balance joy with responsibility. My monthly massage ritual is now a bi-monthly treat. In between, I use longer showers and DIY scrubs to recreate that pause. I’ve learned how much I relied on that reset. And through it all, my hair remains non-negotiable. It’s an instant mood lifter and a reminder that even in a tight economy, I refuse to lose my confidence or my soft life.

Downsizing spending is smart, but calling it a guilty pleasure seems a stretch for many of us.

Set a small monthly treat fund, even if it's just 2000 naira, to preserve a bit of indulgence guilt-free.
