Osun’s Local Government Leadership Crisis: Elections, Injunctions, and Fund Fiasco

Common sense suggests the APC’s twilight elections in Osun should stand despite any boycott. After their elected chairmen took office, the incoming governor secured a court injunction to sack them and appoint his loyalists. The APC then boycotted the governor’s own council polls. Later, courts reinstated the original chairmen only for a fresh injunction to remove them again on tenure-expiry grounds. Similar disputes invalidated PDP local polls elsewhere. This back-and-forth has frozen federal allocations for councils. The FG must release these funds while the legal battle continues. Governors cannot withhold council allocations without clear constitutional grounds. Judges issuing injunctions against basic constitutional principles must face investigation. Council chairmen should count their tenure only when officially recognised by the state.

Could the twilight elections really hold legal weight despite that governor's court injunction on those local council chairs?

I dey with you. Even with injunction, twilight elections fit hold some real legal sway.

It's striking how quickly the incoming governor used the courts to remove elected chairmen right after they assumed office.

Boycotting the council poll might have backfired, but maybe the APC saw no other way to highlight the injustice.

We should push for clear rules on fund allocation and judicial timelines to prevent future chaos in local government elections.
