Why NNPC Retail Should List Separately and Turn Filling Stations Into Solar Power Hubs

With NNPC reportedly nearing a listing on the Nigerian Exchange, I think NNPC Retail should be separated and listed independently. Its current value could be about ₦500 billion, but a ₦1 trillion capital raise could expand it into a ₦1.5 trillion company while reducing the Federal Government’s stake to one-third. I believe the new capital should fund solar photovoltaic farms at roughly 1,000 NNPC filling stations. These sites could generate about 1,000MW of electricity initially, supplying nearby homes and industries during the day, storing power for use after sunset, and serving as metered electric-vehicle charging hubs. The company could target 5,000MW within two or three years through further capitalisation. With proper metering and revenue collection, electricity could be sold through distribution companies, while the NNPC-owned generating business retains most of the revenue. This model could diversify NNPC Retail beyond fuel sales, add more than ₦100 billion yearly in revenue, and potentially support substantial shareholder dividends as the business scales.

What would separate listing change most: access to capital, accountability, or the speed of converting filling stations into solar hubs?

How would a separate listing actually make solar conversion at stations more practical?

The proposal connects retail expansion with a broader energy role, while also arguing that a separate listing could reduce federal ownership.

A ₦1 trillion raise sounds ambitious; the case would be stronger with clearer priorities between retail growth and solar-hub investment.

A phased rollout may be sensible: list the retail arm, identify viable stations first, then measure solar-hub results before wider expansion.
