Ogun Assembly Advances Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill to Reduce Maternal Mortality
The Ogun State House of Assembly has commenced the second reading of the Safe Termination of Pregnancy Bill aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality across the state. Speaker Oludaisi Elemide assured lawmakers that the proposed legislation will undergo thorough scrutiny by the House Committee on Health and other stakeholders to ensure it aligns with the Constitution and existing Nigerian laws without creating legal conflicts. Sponsor Hon. Wahab Haruna and other members highlighted the need for clear medical and legal guidelines for qualified practitioners, especially in high-risk pregnancies and cases where a woman’s life is at risk or in instances of rape. The bill has been committed to the House Committee on Health for further review and revision before the next stage of the legislative process.
