NIMENA Urges Homegrown Classification Body to Strengthen Nigeria’s Maritime Sovereignty

The Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects has called for an indigenous classification society and locally developed marine standards to drive the country’s blue economy and technical sovereignty. Speaking at a Singapore Maritime Week event, industry leaders and policymakers highlighted the need for a collaborative “Triple Helix” model linking government, academia and private sector to build research capacity and innovation hubs at home. Drawing on Singapore’s success, participants stressed policy consistency, digital transformation and joint research initiatives as crucial steps. Legislative backing for stronger local content was also pledged to ensure sustainable maritime growth.
