17 Federal Reps Defect from ADC to NDC Citing Internal Party Crises

Seventeen members of the House of Representatives have formally left the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigerian Democratic Congress. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu announced the defections on the floor of the Green Chamber during Tuesday’s plenary session. The lawmakers attributed their switch to “unresolved crises” within the ADC. Those who defected include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah and Lilian Orogbu, among others. This shift is part of a broader political realignment linked to ongoing tensions in the ADC. Former presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso also recently aligned with the NDC ahead of the 2027 elections. In a statement, Obi said his move followed “deep reflection” on the nation’s needs and a desire to reduce internal distractions. He and Kwankwaso urged supporters to prioritise national development and unity in the new political arrangement.

Do you think any hidden power struggle inside ADC might've pushed them to jump ship?

It's unusual for seventeen lawmakers to switch parties publicly during plenary. This suggests the issues in ADC might go beyond mere political disagreements.

I'm not sure these defections will improve anything. Does joining NDC guarantee better party cohesion or just swap one crisis for another?

Party leaders should promptly address internal conflicts and improve communication if they want to prevent future defections and maintain legislative strength.
