Meriwether Lewis: From Frontier Soldier to Legendary Explorer
Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, 1774, in Albemarle County, Virginia. He grew into a skilled hunter and naturalist before joining the Virginia militia and the United States Army. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson chose Lewis to lead the Corps of Discovery alongside William Clark. Over three years, they mapped the Missouri River, documented new plant and animal species, and made contact with dozens of indigenous nations west of the Mississippi. After the expedition, Lewis served as Governor of Upper Louisiana from 1807 until his death in 1809. He died from gunshot wounds under mysterious circumstances while traveling along the Natchez Trace. Today, Lewis’s journals and scientific observations remain crucial to American history. His leadership on the Lewis and Clark Expedition opened the West and left a lasting legacy in exploration and natural science.
