Osun Governorship Election: Can Voters Trust the Ballot Again?

Trust will be the real test as Osun prepares for its governorship election. Ballot papers, polling officials, security personnel and BVAS are important, but they mean little if voters do not believe their choices will be protected and reflected in the final result. Osun’s 2022 governorship contest showed both the progress and the weaknesses of Nigeria’s elections. Technology improved accreditation, but the result still went through lengthy court cases before the Supreme Court affirmed it. For many voters, this raises a difficult question: when does the ballot become the final decision? Low turnout is another major concern. Although millions registered to vote in 2022, fewer than half participated. Across Nigeria, many citizens now hold PVCs but stay away from polling units because of frustration, insecurity, vote buying, poor logistics and doubts about whether their votes matter. A peaceful and transparent election in Osun would strengthen confidence ahead of 2027. But institutions, parties, security agencies and voters all have a role to play. The credibility of the process will depend on whether citizens can trust that the ballot box is stronger than political cynicism.
