Spain Bars US Military Flights, Citing ‘Illegal and Unjust’ Iran War

Spain Bars US Military Flights, Citing ‘Illegal and Unjust’ Iran War

Spain’s defence minister has closed the country’s airspace to US military aircraft involved in attacks on Iran. The government also refused to let US forces use Spanish bases for those operations. Defence Minister Margarita Robles described the conflict as “profoundly illegal and profoundly unjust.” Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged the US, Israel and Iran to stop the war and warned that responding to one illegality with another only leads to disaster. The restriction forces US and allied aircraft to reroute through France and Germany except in emergencies. Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo confirmed the decision aligns with Spain’s refusal to participate in a war launched unilaterally against international law.

Governments could now draft explicit clauses in defence agreements to address political objections over airspace and base operations.
