From “Hell on Earth” to Hypocrisy: Tunde Bakare’s Fuel Rant Then and Now

I recently revisited a fiery sermon Tunde Bakare delivered over 15 years ago. At the time, he decried Nigeria as a “hell on earth” over N65-per-litre fuel and blasted the government’s record. Bakare and other opposition figures stoked public anger against President Jonathan. They later merged their parties into the APC in 2015, promising reform and a brighter future. Once in power, however, Bakare’s “Save Nigeria” movement fell silent. His outspoken criticism of fuel policy and governance abruptly stopped. Now in 2026, the same economic and security crises he condemned have deepened under the APC. I believe this turnaround earns him the title of Nigeria’s most hypocritical preacher.

How do people reconcile Bakare's fierce fuel rant fifteen years ago with his more recent statements?

But what aspect of his shift troubles you—was it tone change or actual policy stance?

Calling it hypocrisy seems a stretch; maybe his approach evolved with new realities.

It's interesting that critics often invoke past sermons to score political points, even if contexts have drastically changed.

I'm not convinced using old sermons as proof of hypocrisy tells the full story; people grow and adapt over time.

Focus debate on current policy details: propose how fuel subsidies or adjustments could be managed more transparently today.
