World Cup Final to Shape 2026 Ballon d’Or Race Between Messi and Yamal

World Cup Final to Shape 2026 Ballon d’Or Race Between Messi and Yamal

Former Spain midfielder Gaizka Mendieta says the outcome of the Argentina vs Spain World Cup final could decide the next Ballon d’Or winner. He believes Lionel Messi will be the overwhelming favourite for a record ninth award if Argentina triumphs. Messi’s leadership, goals and assists in the tournament have strengthened his claim on football’s top individual honour. At the same time, Mendieta highlights Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal as a strong challenger should Spain lift the trophy. Yamal’s creativity and influence have marked him out as one of the competition’s breakout stars. Mendieta adds that other Spanish players, such as Mikel Oyarzabal, could also enter the conversation if they win, but victory for Argentina would give Messi a clear edge in the Ballon d’Or vote.

Mendieta's view seems rooted in Messi's history of decisive impact rather than Yamal's emerging talent or Spain's overall team strength.

Isn't it premature to tie the Ballon d'Or race purely to one match, no matter how high the stakes?

Fans should focus on consistent season performances for both players instead of expecting a single match to seal the Ballon d'Or outcome.
