Army Reports Nearly 1,000 Insurgents and Family Members Surrender in North-East
The Nigerian Army says 958 insurgents and their relatives surrendered to troops across the North-East in 2026. Maj. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, disclosed the figure in Maiduguri. He noted that since 2021, a total of 152,864 fighters and family members have laid down their arms, including 20,815 active male fighters, 37,095 women, and 64,114 children. The spike in surrenders reflects sustained military pressure, effective intelligence operations, and worsening conditions in insurgent camps. All those who surrender undergo thorough screening and debriefing, providing valuable intelligence for ongoing operations. The commander praised the Borno Model deradicalisation and reintegration programme, backed by local and international partners. He highlighted close cooperation with community leaders and humanitarian groups in building trust and urged continued efforts to prevent recidivism.
