2026 Budget: MDAs Allocate Over N400bn to Mosques, Palaces and Other Local Projects
Federal ministries, departments and agencies reportedly earmarked more than N400bn in the 2026 budget for projects such as mosques, traditional palaces, village halls, markets, mini-stadia, tricycles, grains and community support schemes. The allocations include projects that appear unrelated to the mandates of the agencies handling them. Examples cited include palace renovations, market stalls, mosque remodelling and a Sociology Department building budgeted under agencies focused on roads, productivity and mathematics. Analysts say the fragmented spending could divert scarce funds from national priorities such as healthcare, education, security, power and roads. They also blame weak legislative oversight and question the realism of the 2026 budget assumptions, as implementation of the 2025 budget has been extended into September 2026.
