Family Demands Independent Probe after Soldier Udeh’s Burial Snub

Family Demands Independent Probe after Soldier Udeh’s Burial Snub

The family of the late soldier Jude Osondu Udeh has called for a transparent, independent investigation into the circumstances of his death. Acting through lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor, they have appealed to the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff for formal accountability. They reject the military’s claim of covering any expenses, citing receipts that show the family paid in full for transporting the body to Ezeagu and all mortuary bills. They also highlighted the absence of any military honours at the burial, despite notifying the 82 Division in Enugu. The family warns that such lapses and subsequent attempts to recast facts threaten public confidence and soldier morale. They say honouring fallen personnel is not optional and argue that the military’s oversight must be admitted and corrected. They urge the high command to acknowledge the error, offer a sincere apology, and institute measures to ensure no other family suffers similar indignity.

Given the family's call for an independent probe, what steps should civilians expect from the Defence Ministry or military leadership next?
