1 / 4

May brings a fresh lineup of Nollywood releases to cinemas nationwide. From romance and family drama to historical epics and international comedy, this month has something for every movie lover. Call of My Life is a romantic comedy starring Uzoamaka Power as Soluchi, a call-centre agent recovering from a tough breakup. When she connects with charming Eli (Andrew Bunting) on a routine call, her view of love takes an unexpected turn. The film also features Nkem Owoh, Patience Ozokwor, Beverly Osu, Broda Shaggi, and live performances by Johnny Drille and Cobhams Asuquo. The Boy Who Gave is a heartfelt drama set on Bonny Island. Written, directed, produced, and led by Allison Precious Emmanuel, it follows teenager Idah as he drops out of school to care for his siblings after their parents’ death. The film premiered at the Africa International Film Festival and stars Tina Mba, Chuks Joseph, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Abbey Delight Dagogo, and Hart Andrew. Efunroye: The Unicorn and Ajosepo 2: The Gathering round out this month’s must-watch list. Efunroye: The Unicorn tells the true story of 19th-century powerbroker Efunroye Tinubu in colonial Lagos, starring Faithia Williams. Ajosepo 2 reunites the chaotic family from the 2024 hit for more wedding mayhem, with Toyin Abraham, Timini Egbuson, Mercy Aigbe, Bolaji Ogunmola, Bisola Aiyeola, and more.

They've lined up a broad range from family drama to international comedy, yet I'm wary this variety might water down each film's unique voice.

I'm not convinced "Call of My Life" go deliver enough laughs from just a call-centre romance.

To really appreciate this month's slate, maybe start with lighter rom-com like Call of My Life before tackling deeper family dramas or epics.
