Eight Dead in Pre-Dawn Cult Attack on Makurdi Community
A coordinated raid by suspected cultists in the Aliade Street area of Makurdi left eight people dead in the early hours of Monday. Witnesses say gunmen on motorcycles stormed a residential compound around 2 a.m., dragged victims outside and opened fire. Four died instantly and others were shot when neighbours rushed to help. The Chairman of Makurdi Local Government, Joseph Keffi, blamed rival cult clashes for the violence. He noted that some innocent residents were caught up after allegedly sheltering someone linked to the feud. Security forces have been deployed and a prime suspect is believed to be out of state. Benue State’s Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, confirmed the attack but said casualty figures may differ once investigations conclude. The community remains on edge, with residents urging stronger intelligence gathering and patrols to prevent further violence.
