DSS Seeks Remand for Sowore Over Bail Breach as Tinubu Defamation Trial Resumes
The Department of State Services asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to remand African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre for allegedly failing to perfect his bail terms in the defamation suit against President Bola Tinubu. Prosecution counsel Akinlolu Kehinde SAN told Justice Mohammed Umar that Sowore has yet to meet the bail conditions and has not informed the prosecution of any difficulty. The defence opposed the application, arguing that bail is not punitive and that document verification is nearly complete. Sowore’s lawyer, Olumide Fusika SAN, explained that the delay in depositing the passport was due to a public holiday at the US Embassy. He assured the court the passport would be submitted before close of business and asked that Sowore remain in his care until the next hearing. The defence officially opened its case by calling lawyer Deji Adeyanju as the first witness. Adeyanju referenced video remarks by President Tinubu on citizens’ right to criticise public officials. Justice Umar adjourned the trial until July 13 for continuation.
