UNIOSUN Summit Champions Innovation and Climate Resilience for Nigeria’s Blue Economy

UNIOSUN Summit Champions Innovation and Climate Resilience for Nigeria’s Blue Economy

Osun State University recently hosted the 7th Annual Conference of the Association of Nigerian Fisheries Scientists. The event gathered academics, policymakers, researchers and industry stakeholders to explore ways of driving sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in Nigeria. In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor’s representative reaffirmed UNIOSUN’s commitment to research, innovation and strategic partnerships. Conference speakers highlighted the urgent need to bridge the gap between Nigeria’s annual fish demand and domestic production. Keynotes examined challenges like climate change, illegal fishing and low technological adoption. Experts called for evidence-based policies, stronger extension services and increased investment in climate-smart aquaculture. Dignitaries included university leaders, state commissioners for agriculture and education, FAO representatives and fisheries professionals from across the country. The conference aims to unlock the sector’s potential for food security, job creation and sustainable economic growth.

While academics and policymakers are onboard, actual funding and infrastructure often fall short when it comes to sustaining rural aquaculture projects.

Interesting summit highlights, but I'm not convinced university conferences alone can drive real change in Nigeria's blue economy.

Local stakeholders should form joint taskforces that link research findings with community training and financing models to boost sustainable fisheries.
