Cleric Shafiy Adeba Draws Outrage Over Remarks Targeting Non-Muslims

Yoruba-speaking Islamic cleric Shafiy Adeba has sparked outrage after a video showed him making inflammatory comments about non-Muslims, whom he repeatedly called “kafir”. Speaking mainly in Yoruba, Adeba claimed Muslims had a religious right to fight, restrict and enslave non-Muslims. He also described war against non-believers as being rooted in Islam. The remarks have raised concerns over religious intolerance and the risk of incitement in Nigeria’s multi-faith society. The video was shared widely on social media, although the cleric’s comments do not represent the views of all Muslims.

Absolutely. Leaders should lower the temperature, reject sweeping attacks, and make room for respectful dialogue across faith lines.

The reported language is troubling because repeated labels and calls to restrict others can deepen distrust far beyond one video.

Outrage is understandable, but people should still distinguish one cleric's remarks from the beliefs of every Muslim.
