Revolution and Regret: Iran’s Warning on Failed Change
Iran is gripped by mass protests as citizens chant “death to the Ayatollah” and even call for the return of the Shah. Under the Pahlavi dynasty, the country enjoyed social freedoms, expanding education, a growing middle class and greater visibility for women. Many Iranians still longed for more political participation and dignity and were drawn to Khomeini’s grand promises of freedom and prosperity. The 1979 revolution delivered mass executions, public amputations, economic ruin and a regime bent on exporting terror and pursuing nuclear weapons. Ordinary Iranians sank deeper into poverty despite the nation’s vast oil wealth. This unfolding unrest offers two key lessons: revolutions can break more than they fix, and building society around personalities rather than clear principles and institutions carries a terrible price. Iran now stands at another crossroads—will its future rest on liberty, democracy and rule of law, or simply exchange one burden for another?
