After Quitting Tinubu’s Cabinet, Tuggar, Adelabu and Alkali Lose APC Primaries
Several former ministers resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet ahead of the 2027 elections. Only two of the five who stepped down have so far secured APC tickets. Yusuf Tuggar fell short in the Bauchi governorship primary, polling 26,001 votes against Mohammed Abubakar’s 57,517. Bala Wunti trailed with 13,648 votes. In Oyo, ex-Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu was defeated by Senator Sarafadeen Alli amid allegations of irregularities. Former Transport Minister Saidu Alkali also failed to enter the Gombe race after boycotting the primary over similar claims. Only Nkeiruka Onyejeocha and Yusuf Sununu have emerged unopposed or victorious in their federal constituency primaries. The outcomes underline that federal appointments alone cannot replace grassroots support in Nigeria’s party politics.
