Tensions Flare as Iran Strikes US Bases in Jordan and Bahrain on World Cup Eve
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched long-range missile attacks on American bases in Jordan and Bahrain the day before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The strikes came after US forces struck Iranian air defence systems in response to the downing of an American Apache helicopter. Both sides warned they would answer any attack in kind. Jordan shot down five missiles with no reported damage, while Bahrain and Kuwait intercepted additional incoming threats. Iran urged its Gulf neighbours to stop letting foreign powers use their territory for hostile actions. The escalation has drawn calls for restraint from the United States, Russia, China and other international actors worried about a wider Middle East conflict.
