Lagos Court Jails Two Chinese Men Over Illegal Mineral Exports
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has convicted Zhang Hong Lin and Gao Pei Hai for conspiracy and the unlawful export of mineral resources. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said the men conspired with another suspect, who is still at large, to export mica, copper-bearing and lithium-bearing minerals without approval. The prosecution said the alleged act deprived the Federal Government of revenue. Both defendants pleaded guilty to the five-count charge. Justice Aluko sentenced each man to five years’ imprisonment on each count, with an option of a ₦50 million fine covering all counts. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the recovered minerals to the Federal Government.
