Artemis II Crew Shares Breathtaking Earth Photos from Space

Artemis II Crew Shares Breathtaking Earth Photos from Space — 1 of 3
1 / 3

The Artemis II team has released the first high-resolution images of Earth taken beyond low orbit. Commander Reid Wiseman, alongside NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Victor Glover and CSA’s Jeremy Hansen, captured these views shortly after leaving Earth. The standout image, titled “Hello, World,” shows our planet nearly eclipsing the Sun, with auroras glowing above and below. A second shot highlights Earth’s nighttime glow as a “pale blue dot” set against the blackness of space. Astronauts say they were “glued to the window,” pausing their work to admire the full-disk panorama. Mission control even reoriented the spacecraft at sunset to give them the best vantage of Africa, Europe, and dancing Northern Lights. Currently more than 100,000 miles from home, the crew will loop behind the Moon on April 6 before using its gravity to return. Splashdown in the Pacific off San Diego is planned for April 10, as part of a test flight paving the way for a 2028 lunar landing.

What aspects of our planet surprise you most in these high-resolution Earth images from beyond low orbit?

Absolutely! The way coastlines curve against the deep blue sea from space really steals the show.

I get the awe, but zooming out sometimes hides everyday weather patterns that tell a deeper story.

High-resolution shots look stunning, but I wonder how much image processing shapes the final result versus what astronauts actually saw.

Impressive photos, yet it feels odd that only one vantage point gets the spotlight when there are multiple crew perspectives worth sharing.
