Lagos Airport Taxi Drivers Lament FAAN’s 2020-Model Vehicle Policy

Lagos Airport Taxi Drivers Lament FAAN’s 2020-Model Vehicle Policy

Taxi operators at Lagos State’s local and international airports say a recent FAAN directive will bar cars older than 2020 from picking up passengers. They warn that approved vehicles can cost as much as ₦18 million, a price tag beyond most drivers’ reach. The drivers allege this move is designed to edge them out and allow insiders to introduce their own fleets at the airports. In a video circulating on social media, they appeal directly to President Tinubu for intervention, stressing that jobs are scarce and that this policy threatens their livelihoods.

Are there any financing or lease schemes taxi drivers can realistically tap into for these 2020-model vehicles?

It seems odd that FAAN would enforce such expensive car requirements without any subsidy or phase-in period for local drivers.

True talk! Forcing pricey cars on small drivers no be small thing. They deserve some easing now.

I'm not convinced older taxis are always unsafe; maybe FAAN should inspect maintenance records instead of outright banning cars.

Drivers could form cooperatives to pool resources and negotiate group financing deals for the 2020-model vehicles.
