Israel Refuses to Recognize Igbo Jews, Citing Lack of Evidence
Israel’s Chief Rabbinate and courts have officially rejected the claim that Igbo people descend from the Lost Tribes of Israel. This ruling means Igbo communities practicing Judaism cannot access automatic citizenship under the Law of Return. Petitions filed by Igbo claimants were dismissed for insufficient historical, archaeological, or genetic proof. As a result, those identifying as Jewish must complete a formal conversion process—often within the Conservative movement—since the Orthodox rabbinate does not accept their self-identification. An estimated 10,000 to 30,000 practicing Igbo Jews live in Nigeria. Yet they remain outside mainstream recognition and do not receive the same rights granted to other Jewish communities, such as the Beta Israel of Ethiopia.
