Oby Ezekwesili Challenges Tinubu: Don’t Wish Nigerian Children a Happy Children’s Day
In a statement marking Children’s Day, former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili accused President Bola Tinubu and other leaders of lacking the moral standing to celebrate Nigerian children. She argued that ongoing insecurity and repeated school kidnappings make any festive message hollow. Ezekwesili detailed recent abductions in Oyo, Kebbi, Niger and Kaduna States, among others, and reminded that over 1,799 students remain in captivity since the Chibok schoolgirls were taken in 2014. She said leaders must first account for every missing child and publish audited figures on out-of-school rates, stunting, learning poverty and child mortality. She urged the government to set concrete, measurable actions for this fiscal year to secure schools, improve education and protect children. Anything less, she warned, would desecrate Children’s Day and inflict fresh wounds on Nigeria’s youngest citizens.
