Alexia Jayy Breaks 15-Year Record as The Voice’s First Black Female Champion
Alexia Jayy made history on April 14 as the first Black woman to win The Voice in the show’s 15-year run. The 31-year-old R&B singer from Alabama impressed coaches and viewers with powerful performances of “Lady Marmalade” and “One and Only,” finishing off the finale with a duet of “Sunday Morning” alongside coach Adam Levine. Her journey began with a blind audition of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) a Natural Woman,” which earned chair turns from all coaches. She chose Team Adam partly because her nine-year-old son Matthew is a devoted Maroon 5 fan. From the Battle Round through the Semis, her consistency and tone—likened to Whitney Houston and Lauryn Hill—made her the one to watch. Before The Voice, Alexia sang background vocals on The Tonight Show and joined Leon Bridges for a Grammy tribute to Roberta Flack. She released her debut single “Who Raised You” in 2021 and her EP “Mixed Emotions” earlier this year. As champion, she wins $100,000 and a record deal with Republic Records. Her new single “Rent Free,” produced by Grammy winners Jack Splash and Jim Jonsin, explores knowing your worth.
