FCT Residents Struggle as Vegetable Prices Soar
Food vendors and households in the Federal Capital Territory are struggling as the cost of vegetables more than doubles in recent months. A large basket of tomatoes now goes for over ₦85,000, up from around ₦45,000. A 50kg bag of pepper has jumped from under ₦30,000 to nearly ₦150,000. Vendors say they have been forced to raise meal prices, cut portions or switch to sachet pastes to cope. Some buy in bulk directly from farmers and preserve produce. Others rely more on onions or reduce fresh tomato use despite spoilage risks from irregular electricity supply. Consumers report tighter budgets, opting for dried vegetables or cooking pastes when fresh produce is unaffordable. They are urging authorities to support farmers with better storage facilities, transport improvements and incentives to lessen post-harvest losses and ease market prices.
