Federal High Court Forfeits Additional Properties of Ex-Power Minister Saleh Mamman

Federal High Court Forfeits Additional Properties of Ex-Power Minister Saleh Mamman

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the forfeiture of more assets belonging to convicted former Power Minister Saleh Mamman. Justice James Omotosho ruled that Walijam Apartments in Wuse 2 be permanently seized after finding they were bought with unlawfully acquired funds. Four other properties—including Bloom Luxury Suites in Kaduna, two mansions on Misratah Street in Abuja and A.U.A Plaza in Wuse 2—were placed under interim forfeiture. Acting on an EFCC application, the court noted that Mamman diverted about ₦22 billion from power projects, though less than ₦2 billion has been recovered so far. Justice Omotosho directed the EFCC to publish the interim forfeiture order in a national newspaper within seven days to allow any interested parties to show cause why the remaining assets should not be permanently forfeited. This ruling follows Mamman’s 75-year jail sentence for laundering ₦33.8 billion. The judge cited Section 321 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, which empowers the court to order restitution even after conviction.

This action looks fair, accountability must start at the top and the courts must enforce the law equally.

It's striking that even after conviction, more properties keep appearing, raising doubts about earlier investigations' thoroughness.

Asset forfeiture might feel satisfying, but it doesn't guarantee it will deter future abuses or end the cycle of corruption.

Agreed this sets a precedent. Authorities should publish clear asset tracing guidelines so public funds can't be laundered into luxury properties again.
