Nwaiwu Steps In for Injured Bassey in Super Eagles Squad for Iran and Jordan Friendlies

Chibuike Nwaiwu has received his first senior call-up to the Super Eagles. He replaces Calvin Bassey, who withdrew with a back injury. The announcement came via the team’s official social media channel. Nigeria face Iran on Friday, 27 March, then take on Jordan on Tuesday, 31 March, both in Antalya, Turkey. Nwaiwu was previously named in the Nigeria U-23 squad for the 2024 Olympic qualifiers. He began his senior club career with Heartland F.C. in 2021 before moving to Enyimba in October 2022, helping them win the 2022–23 NPFL title. In September 2024, he joined Austria’s Wolfsberger AC on a contract through 2027. This season in the Turkish Super Lig, the 22-year-old has made 10 appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist.

Replacing an established defender like Bassey might disrupt the backline cohesion, especially so soon before two tough friendlies.

I no sure say Nwaiwu don show enough skills to fill Bassey's boots at this level just yet.

It might help for the coaching staff to integrate him gradually, maybe ease him in during less risky moments of the friendlies.
