Plateau Assembly Proposes Lifetime Pensions for Former Lawmakers

The Plateau State House of Assembly has passed a bill for second reading to set up lifetime pensions and retirement benefits for former speakers, deputies, principal officers and members. The law, sponsored by Eli Ankala, would create a Pension Board to manage payments, eliminate ghost pensioners and enforce transparent records and regular beneficiary verification. The state’s PDP has criticized the proposal as insensitive amid security and economic challenges, warning it could divert public funds and turn public office into a pathway for private enrichment.
