Kwara Student Abandons Newborn at Hospital, Ministry Vows Support

Kwara Student Abandons Newborn at Hospital, Ministry Vows Support

A student mother abandoned her newborn baby at Apalara Medical Hospital in Kwara State shortly after delivery. The hospital staff alerted the State Ministry of Women Affairs on Friday, April 3. Commissioner Opeyemi Oluwakemi said the state government will provide all medical and physical care for the child. She commended the citizens and officials who brought the baby into protective custody. The ministry cited the Child Rights Law’s provisions on fostering and adoption. Chief Medical Director Giwa Luqman revealed that the mother had initially sought to terminate her pregnancy. His counselling persuaded her to carry the baby to term, but she still left the child after birth. The ministry stressed the need for due process and adequate time for mothers to reconsider.

How can the community better support young mothers facing such challenges in Kwara after this hospital case?

Absolutely. We could organise local support circles, partner with clinics for free checkups, and share parenting resources among mothers.

I agree we must step up, but real change starts with stable jobs and affordable childcare, not just donations.

It's puzzling how a student mother could walk away from her newborn despite hospital protocols and ongoing ministry oversight.

I'm not convinced that government promises alone will prevent future incidents; we need a critical look at existing social safety nets.

The ministry could set up a confidential hotline and partner with community centres to track mothers and ensure follow-up medical care.
