Tinubu Seeks House Approval for State Police Bill to Strengthen Security

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Constitution Alteration (State Police) Bill, 2026 to the House of Representatives. The bill aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to pave the way for state police services alongside the federal force. In a letter read on the House floor, Tinubu said the proposed legislation builds on earlier work and adds safeguards for an effective dual policing system. He described it as a key element of his administration’s security reform agenda and urged lawmakers to consider and pass the measure swiftly. The move follows Senate approval of a similar constitutional amendment two weeks ago. If the House passes the bill and at least two-thirds of state assemblies endorse it, states will be empowered to set up their own police services to address local security challenges.
