LASU Convocation Gridlock: Seven Hours in Traffic Shows Why Better Planning Is Urgent
I spent almost four hours on the Badagry Expressway and another three hours on the Iyana-Iba–Isheri Road during LASU’s convocation. What should have been a day of celebration became an exhausting ordeal for commuters, residents, guests and businesses. This disruption reportedly happens every year. A university convocation should not bring major roads to a standstill or turn public highways into parking spaces. LASU needs to treat traffic flow, parking and crowd control as essential parts of its event planning. The institution should work early with traffic authorities to create clear entry and exit routes, designated parking areas and real-time traffic control. It should also issue advance road advisories and consider holding the ceremony in multiple sessions or across several days to reduce congestion. Graduation is worth celebrating, but it should not cost people six to eight hours in gridlock. LASU must adopt a proactive and enforceable traffic plan before its next convocation.
