1 / 3

The Executive Chairman of Ikot Ekpene, Hon. Elder Aniefiok Nkom, officially launched the 75th anniversary celebrations at the Local Government Secretariat on April 11, 2026. Under the theme “Celebrating Heritage, Inspiring the Future,” he described the milestone as a strategic platform for cultural and economic rebirth. Nkom highlighted a series of landmark events, including the historic coronation of the Paramount Ruler in August and a grand exhibition of local products with the commissioning of the new Ikot Ekpene Local Government Shopping Mall in December. These initiatives aim to restore traditional stature and boost commerce in the Raffia City. Looking beyond festivities, the chairman called for stronger international visibility, investment in agriculture and creative industries, and a “Cultural Renaissance” to empower the next generation. He urged indigenes in the diaspora and local investors to partner with the council, while traditional leaders remain custodians of their rich heritage. Exhibiting raffia art won't attract investors by itself unless paired with clear plans for market access and improved transport links.
