Cross River’s Health Transformation: Gov. Otu’s Plan to Rebuild PHCs and Hospitals
For years, Cross River residents struggled to access quality care due to dilapidated facilities, staff shortages and weak primary healthcare centres. Since taking office, Governor Bassey Otu has made health a priority, boosting the sector allocation from 6% to 13.5% and recruiting over 2,000 health workers. He also granted the College of Health Technology polytechnic status and set up a new Hospital Management Board. With support from the World Bank and the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, the government has renovated nearly 430 PHCs, upgraded dialysis centres, equipped a fistula centre and built emergency and oxygen facilities in Calabar and Ogoja. Drone deliveries now reach remote communities. Immunisation coverage is above 95%, maternal and neonatal deaths have declined, and public confidence in government hospitals is rising. Stakeholders say sustained funding and more staff will be key to maintaining this momentum.
