From Centre to States: Tinubu’s Push to Decentralize Security, Governance and Power

From Centre to States: Tinubu’s Push to Decentralize Security, Governance and Power

As an optimist, I believe the lasting impact of this administration will be its quiet shift toward decentralizing three critical pillars: security, governance and electricity. For decades, national security efforts were overly centralized. State policing promises to harness local intelligence, speed up response and make communities safer. Greater autonomy for local governments could bring leaders closer to the people. We know our councillors and can hold them accountable, but ensuring credible officeholders is the next challenge. Expanding state roles in the electricity sector could finally address our chronic power shortages. These reforms require patience and cooperation, but if they take root, Nigeria’s diverse federation could thrive.
