UK Envoy Reaffirms Neutral Role in Nigeria’s 2027 Elections
During a visit to Kwara State, Deputy British High Commissioner Gill Lever affirmed that the UK will not interfere in Nigeria’s 2027 general elections or favour any political party. She stressed that Downing Street remains neutral and respects Nigerians’ right to choose their leaders. Lever noted that free, peaceful, and credible elections are both a democratic objective and an economic imperative. She praised Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq for achieving more than 50% women representation in his cabinet and commended his administration’s reforms in education and healthcare. The envoy also reviewed UK-supported projects like the Ilorin Innovation Hub and a digital community centre in Ifelodun. These initiatives aim to provide tech skills and digital access to over 50,000 young Nigerians, boosting their chances of securing global employment. In response, Governor Abdulrazaq outlined plans to raise the state’s minimum wage to ₦100,000 this year, build five teaching hospitals by 2027 to address healthcare staffing gaps, and establish a major Shea processing factory in Kaiama.
