FG Bans ‘Dr’ Prefix for Honorary Degree Recipients
The Federal Government has announced that holders of honorary degrees may no longer use the title “Dr” in any official, academic or professional context. This follows a decision by the Federal Executive Council to classify such misrepresentation as academic fraud, carrying legal and reputational penalties. Education Minister Tunji Alausa briefed State House correspondents in Abuja on a new uniform policy for awarding and using honorary degrees. He said the move aims to curb decades of indiscriminate conferrals driven by political patronage and financial gain. Under the policy, universities must follow strict guidelines on who qualifies for honorary awards. Any breach of these rules will trigger sanctions. Alausa warned that serving public officials should not receive honorary degrees, as this undermines the ethics of academic honours.
