Gateway Airport Launches Maiden International Flight with 345 Hajj Pilgrims — 1 of 4
1 / 4

On the night of Sunday, 3 May 2026, Gateway International Airport in the Iperu-Ilishan area of Ogun State recorded its first international departure. Operated by Max Air, the aircraft carried 345 Muslim pilgrims (151 men and 194 women) alongside officials from the state’s Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board on their journey to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. State officials confirmed the flight landed safely at King Abdulaziz International Airport, describing the milestone as proof of the facility’s readiness for wide-body operations and long-haul travel. Since its commercial inauguration in October 2025, the airport project—launched in 2021—has aimed to deliver a modernised transport network for Ogun State.

Absolutely, this flight can boost regional connectivity, attract new routes, and stimulate local businesses around Gateway Airport.

I see the optimism, but one flight alone might not shift the local economy much. We need sustained routes and supporting infrastructure.

Notice they carried 345 pilgrims (151 men, 194 women) on their first flight; that's quite a crowd for a maiden international service.

I'm not sure this maiden flight is enough to transform Gateway Airport into a major hub; one successful trip doesn't guarantee long-term viability.

To support future departures, the airport should streamline check-in and pre-flight orientations specifically tailored for large pilgrim groups.
