Shehu Sani Backs FG’s Withdrawal of Passports From Citizenship Renouncers

Former Kaduna Central senator Shehu Sani has praised the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw and deactivate passports of Nigerians who have formally renounced their citizenship. The directive, issued by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, instructs the Nigeria Immigration Service to revoke passports of any individual whose renunciation has been approved in line with constitutional procedures. In a post on his official X account, Sani said that once citizens choose a new nationality, that choice must be fully enforced. He added: “If you don’t like our country, go to where you like.” Minister Tunji-Ojo said the measure is part of broader immigration and identity management reforms. It aims to prevent misuse of travel documents, strengthen border security and preserve the integrity of Nigerian citizenship.

This feels like an overreach that might alienate Nigerian expats instead of encouraging them back.

The government should pair this policy with clear guidelines for renouncers wishing to reapply for passports in future.
