My Laptop Nearly Wiped My Final-Year Project: Please Back Up Your Files

I had a scary experience yesterday when my laptop crashed and restarted. When it came back on, half of my Documents folder was empty. My CV, final-year project and some scanned family pictures were gone. I was already thinking of how to explain the missing project to my lecturer when a friend recommended a file-recovery tool. Thankfully, it recovered everything. I have now saved the files on cloud storage and an external drive. Please back up your important files now. Do not wait until your computer develops a fault. Has anyone here lost important files before? How did you recover them?
