IGP Disu’s Reforms: Restoring Trust and Securing Nigerian Elections

IGP Disu’s Reforms: Restoring Trust and Securing Nigerian Elections

Under the leadership of IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Nigeria Police Force is embracing professionalism and accountability. Discipline is enforced and impunity eradicated to rebuild public confidence. A key focus has been election security. Ahead of recent polls in Ekiti State, officers worked under clear rules of engagement. Neutral deployment covered all local areas and polling units. This approach delivered a peaceful and orderly election. After the tragic killing of Mene Ogidi, the IGP swiftly removed the officers involved and ordered criminal prosecution. This demonstrated that misconduct will no longer go unpunished. The force now holds rogue officers accountable to strengthen community trust. Further efforts in Osun State include a pact to arrest political agitators and tactical reinforcements to protect voters ahead of the August 2026 governorship election. Through these measures, the police aim to secure free and fair polls and deepen democratic consolidation.

I totally agree, these reforms could really boost turnout by giving voters confidence and strengthening election trust nationwide.

It's interesting to see the focus on discipline, but such top-down measures don't always translate into lasting changes on the streets.

While accountability is welcome, shouldn't community policing and local engagement play a bigger role than just enforcing discipline?

To truly secure elections, they could train more officers in nonpartisan crowd management techniques and involve independent observers for transparency.
