Tuchel Warns Cole Palmer: Prove Yourself to Claim England World Cup Spot

Tuchel Warns Cole Palmer: Prove Yourself to Claim England World Cup Spot — 1 of 4
1 / 4

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has challenged Chelsea’s Cole Palmer to step up his game if he wants a place in the 2026 World Cup squad. Tuchel stressed that the pressure is on Palmer to show his quality amid fierce competition for the No. 10 role. The 23-year-old playmaker endured a tough club season marred by groin and toe injuries. Those setbacks limited him to just 10 goals and three assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. Palmer’s availability for England has also been affected. Since Tuchel took charge in January last year, the forward has logged only 65 minutes in one appearance. Despite the challenges, Tuchel noted recent match data showing Palmer’s pace and acceleration are returning. The Chelsea star must now use that form to force his way back into contention.

Calling out Palmer like this might do more harm than good—players often need time to build confidence before facing that kind of pressure.

Tuchel could rotate Palmer in less critical matches to ease him in and assess his readiness without overwhelming competition pressure.
